‘’I only used 70 percent of my capabilities. And that’s what I regret.’’ These are the opening words of retired Dutch filmmaker, René van Nie. While drinking coffee at his favorite spot on the island of Aruba, he talks about his extravagant life and film career as a camera operator, writer, producer, director of more than 200 documentaries and 5 feature films. His was a blossoming career that suddenly stopped. Together with family members and former colleagues, René looks back at a life of stubbornness, his unconventional youth, his lust for women, money, and his plethora of failed life choices… all of which have earned him an undeniable place within the canon of Dutch cinema.
